Back in 2013, the madness that is AMG was introduced to the fairly innocent A-Class. The result of this explosive experiment by Mercedes has become very popular since then!

Last year the A45 AMG received a new face, an updated engine, and a few other bits and bobs to round it off as one of the wildest, quickest, and most expensive hot hatches on sale today.

When the A45 was first introduced, it was hailed for being the most powerful 2.0-litre turbo on the market. For the new car, the power has been raised even further to 280 kW, with 475 Nm on tap.

The specific output of 141 kW per litre has, once again, set a record for production-series four-cylinder motors. An impressive feat indeed!

Other new additions include some revised gear-ratios, enhanced aerodynamics, as well as the adjustable DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode system straight off the AMG GTS. Furthermore, minor tweaks have also been done to the suspension to improve ride and handling.

Merc claim a 4.2 second 0-100 for the A45. Our RoadTest data showed we got very close to that, with 4.41 seconds. Top speed remains capped at 250 km/h though.

Our test car came with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS pack, which adds a ‘RACE’ configuration to the driving-mode selection. The package also includes a majorly beneficial mechanical locking diff at the front, which massively aids traction of the line, and out of the slower corners.

In all, the A45 AMG has proved its worth in the hot hatch world, living up to the hype boy-racers the world over have bestowed upon it. But with a base price of almost R800 000, the Merc still plays true to the other part of its legacy, being one of the most expensive hatches on sale…
